Dawn Dream

Awake from dream into dream
body far away – my eyes stir first
searching for signs of something familiar
they wander the landscape
of your form under sheets
lost in the supple hills and valleys
I ask your softly closed eyelids
if this day is real

Study your sleeping face
trace the line of your parted lips
with the pencil in my mind
nerves sing at the thrill
still myself calm my breath
resist temptation to move, to touch
to jar the unbearable balance
of fantasy made real

Let my pale skin soak in
The endless light of tropical dawn
like a warming leaf
Allow thought to drift back inward
searching for an answer to this riddle
searching for a hold on this new life
searching for something familiar to grasp
but there is nothing familiar
everything is perfect
